There's nothing like swimming in the open water. Open water swim races are a great way to work on your race-day swimming skills without having to conquer a full triathlon.
Swim races in the open water improve your sighting ability and anaerobic fitness which is important as you're sprinting for that first buoy, making a pass or swimming clear of the pack, catching onto a competitors slipstream, or exiting the water running full speed to T1 for the bike leg of the triathlon.
Unless you're training specifically for a triathlon with a pool swim you should hit the open water frequently to work on your stroke and sighting abilities in variable marine conditions.
We recently headed down to Clearwater Beach, FL for the Clearwater Beach Patrol Ocean Mile Swim #2. (They have 3 each year in May, June, and July) It was an overcast day, the thunderstorms were threatening a few miles out in the Gulf of Mexico but luckily they held off so the swimmers did not have to dodge lightning bolts :0)
The swim course, on the North side of Pier 60 (see map), heads North for half a mile to the turnaround buoy. We shot some video of the race. A dolphin even swam into the action!
